Paraguay and USA in contention for the cup in Mexico
The American team of Matt Kuchar and Justin Hueber, and the Paraguayan team of Marco Ruiz and Fabrizio Zanotti are tied with a total of 190 (-23) leading after the third round of this second edition of Bridgestone Golf America´s Cup presented by Value. The great game displayed by Saturday´s leaders left them with the better chances on Sunday for the win at the Club Campestre of Mexico City.
Kuchar and Hueber, leaders after the first 36 holes, signed a card of 63 (-8) while Ruiz and Zanotti needed only 62 strokes (-9), and are back in the lead they had on Thursday.
One stroke behind the leaders are Americans Adam Schenk and Nate Lashley, who, on Saturday, made 62 (-9) for sole third place.
Those in the fray this Sunday include Sebastián Vázquez and Juan Pablo Solis, who with a total of 192 (-21) are in the fourth position, and Carlos Ortiz and Rodolfo Cazaubón, who, with 194 (-19) are eighth.
The fierce struggle for first place began at the first hole and will not be settled until the 72nd. Hueber and Kuchar have shown why they are one of teams with more chances to be crowned the best American Team. Today, the Paraguayans Zanotti (one of the stars of the championship) and Ruiz, with a steady game, took advantage of each and everyl opportunity, especially with great closing birdies, in the 17th and 18th holes.
"We are very calm, and I am having so much fun. The people are wonderful and hearing the children chanting my name is fabulous. Hopefully tomorrow we can have a good day and celebrate ...I would love that," said Kuchar.
"I´ve enjoyed a lot playing with Matt, this has been a great experience, I won here a few months ago (Mexican Open, PGA TOUR LA). This country brings back good memories", added Justin.
Regarding their third round, the Paraguayans said their attitude was crucial, in terms of not giving up and fighting to the end for a good result. "On Thursday we were very solid. We didn´t play well in the second 18 holes but things went very well today. Hopefully we will have the ideal closing round," said Marco Ruiz.
"I felt very well all day. In the second nine holes of the course I struggled a bit, but I managed to get a good score, that kept us in the fight, and that last birdie at the 18th made us leave the course with a nice feeling," said Zanotti.
The local teams are also getting attention. On Saturday, lots of people followed them, here at the Colonia Campestre Churubusco. Solis and Vázquez are confident that they can give the final blow on Sunday and bring new joy to Mexican golf.
"We played very solid golf today, we were better than the other days. Each of us was there when it was necessary, I made a couple of mistakes but Juan Pablo showed up and made the necessary shots," said Sebastián Vázquez.
"This was a very good day to play golf, in the middle of the back 9 it was a little windy, but it did not disturb us much. And we are close to the fray and we will give it all we got," said Juan Pablo Solis.
